Summary
The pilot of a charter Pilatus PC-12 reported smoke entering the cockpit from the heating system while cruising at FL230. The pilot donned the oxygen mask, declared MAYDAY, and diverted to Port Augusta Airport where an uneventful landing was made. One passenger was treated for mild smoke inhalation.
Investigation Findings (4)
- 01Smoke originated from an overheated bleed air heat exchanger due to a partially blocked flow control valve.
- 02The blockage was attributed to contamination from dust ingested during a previous operation on an unsealed strip.
- 03Pilatus Aircraft issued a Service Bulletin recommending more frequent cleaning of the heat exchanger for aircraft operating on dusty or unprepared airstrips.
- 04Executive Jet Management updated maintenance requirements accordingly.
